Uncle Tupelo Recommendations

Just east of the Mississippi River lies Belleville, Illinois, where Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy founded Uncle Tupelo in 1987. The band melded the mutual angsts of agrarian country-folk and punk rock, redrawing the musical map used by so many "alternative country" artists since. When Tupelo disbanded, Tweedy formed Wilco for a list of that estimable band's essential recordings) and Farrar formed Son Volt, both of which are still vaunted as bastions of uncompromising creativity.
