One of the most brilliantly inventive composers of
the 20th century, Gyorgy Ligeti (b. 1923) has been called "the
poet of sonorous matter." During the 1960s, he pioneered
the use of tone clusters in orchestral music--creating vivid,
kaleidoscopic effects of slowly changing texture and density and
discovering a whole world of sound between music and noise. His
style is recognizable for its uniquely absurdist sensibility.
