The son of silent film director J. Gordon Edwards, Blake
Edwards began his career as an actor before moving behind
the camera as a screenwriter and then a director in his own right.
After some early features, he found commercial success through
two early '60s network TV series, Peter Gunn and Mr. Lucky, stylish
cocktails of noir toughness, breezy comedy, and delectable Henry
Mancini scores. Edwards soon emerged as a widescreen farceur adept
at framing screwball performances and slapstick gags with a sleek
visual style. Although he delved successfully into suspense and
character drama, Edwards reached his zenith in the giddy Pink
Panther series, then achieved a mordant second wind in savvy show-biz
satires.
