Few American actresses of Anne Bancroft's generation
(she was born in 1931) have had the career longevity or the constant
admiration of Hollywood and the public. After studying drama at
the Actors Studio, she appeared rather gorgeously in some truly
interesting B pictures. Her greatness was often evident, and she
wisely left Hollywood in 1957, soon earning two Tony Awards on
Broadway, one for her performance as the fascinating and complex
Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker. She reprised the role on
film and won an Oscar in 1962, followed by a sustained period
of high-profile roles (The Graduate). Since then Bancroft has
done eclectic material of varying quality, punctuated by well-received
performances (84 Charing Cross Road). Anne
Bancroft films include
Miracle Worker
84 Charing Cross Road
The Pumpkin Eater
The Slender Thread
The Turning Point
Jesus of Nazareth
The Graduate
