The iconoclastic '90s road movie Thelma & Louise
offers parallels to the career of actress Geena
Davis. Her character, Thelma Dickinson, starts off as a lightweight
and slowly finds her backbone to become a titan of feminine resource.
Geena Davis first gained notoriety as a comfortable, comedic sidekick
in Tootsie (her debut) and Beetlejuice. Her quirkiness won her
an Oscar for her role in the tricky adaptation of The Accidental
Tourist in 1988, and her finest hour came as the hard-hitting
catcher in the baseball comedy-drama A League of Their Own. Her
projects with then-husband Renny Harlin, the Finnish action director,
took her away from her strong suit and into the abysmal dud Cutthroat
Island, although she subsequently found her stride in the action
genre in The Long Kiss Goodnight before taking a hiatus, returning
to her comic roots in Stuart Little.
