Christian mystic and poet, the founder with St Teresa of the Discalced Carmelites, born in Fontiveros, Spain. He became a Carmelite monk in 1563, and was ordained in 1567. Imprisoned at Toledo (1577), he wrote a number of poems, such as Canto espiritual (Spiritual Canticle), which are highly regarded in Spanish mystical literature. After escaping, he became vicar-provincial of Andalusia (1585--7), and died in seclusion at the monastery of Uacbeda. He was canonized in 1726.
