Sundance Film Festival Award Winners on DVD

Getting your independent feature shown at the annual Sundance Film Festival is the Holy Grail of aspiring filmmakers, and with thousands of submissions every year the odds against getting your film selected are staggering. For now at least, it appears that the odds are even greater that your Sundance hit will then be released on DVD, as the following list will attest. Still, it's a tribute to rising talent that these movies--all of which made their debuts at Sundance, in or out of competition--have appeared on DVD. They confirm the early promise of filmmakers like Tom DiCillo, Neil LaBute, and Steven Soderbergh, who have since proven that their debuts were not merely one-hit wonders. In addition, all of these films reflect the spirit of Sundance as originally conceived by its founder and champion, Robert Redford: they're all fiercely independent in style and substance, rising to prominence by virtue of their originality and cinematic vitality. What's more, several of the following DVDs offer scintillating commentaries by the filmmakers, whose enthusiasm and intelligence may very well inspire the Sundance winners of the future.
