Essential Marlon Brando Films

Marlon Brando did nothing less than reinvent the very idea of acting for the second half of the 20th century. Trained in a performance technique popularly known as "the Method," Brando ushered his naturalistic style onto film in 1950 with The Men. He proceeded to dominate the rest of the decade with groundbreaking work (most of it under the direction of Elia Kazan), playing pained and brutal antiheroes and creating a legacy that remains deeply influential. Drawing on sense memory, research, and honest emotion, Brando has a sheer impact on film that makes him a spiritual father of everyone from Robert Duvall to Edward Norton. Brando's reputation slipped in the '60s but was revived in the '70s with a couple of key roles; thereafter, his appearances, however slight or eccentric, have been events.
