Tom Clancy Complete Bookshelf
With Reviews and Reader Comments

As a child, Tom Clancy loved to play with military toys and became interested in technology, especially as it applied to outer space. He attended Catholic schools in Baltimore and took a degree in English from Loyola. One of Clancy's youthful disappointments was that his poor eyesight prevented him from serving in Vietnam. Like many an aspiring writer, Clancy was torn between his art and the need to pay his bills. He worked as an insurance broker and later moved to another agency owned by his wife's grandfather, and eventually bought the business.

Tom Clancy's transformation into a novelist was gradual. He wandered through the research for his first book, The Hunt for Red October. He had read about a Soviet ship whose crew mutinied and tried to defect to Sweden and began talking to his military friends and contacts about it. After the book was published, Clancy's understanding of every technical detail was so impressive that government officials asked Clancy if he had an inside line to the government. But it wasn't only his technical expertise that drew attention. Clancy also created Jack Ryan, a new literary hero, who became a running character in Clancy's bestsellers (Patriot Games, Executive Orders). On the big screen, Jack Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford. Now that Clancy doesn't have to work at the insurance office any more, he puts in regular hours at his computer, spinning even more tales. Generally, he works from 8:30 a.m. to mid-afternoon. In addition to writing, Clancy is a big reader, with science fiction and, of course, espionage among his favorite genres.
