In 1988, Jan Karon, an award-winning advertising writer, went home again--or at least somewhere very like home. A native of the tiny mountain town of Lenoir, North Carolina, Karon had spent most of her adult life working as an advertising executive in Raleigh, New York City, and San Francisco. After more than 30 years in the business, she felt unfulfilled and unhappy. She decided to quit her job and write books. She sold her home in Raleigh and bought a house in the mountain resort village of Blowing Rock.

Back in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Karon began working on a story set in the village of Mitford, which she modeled after Blowing Rock. Published in 1994, At Home in Mitford centered around Father Tim, the unmarried rector of the local Episcopal church. While Father Tim tentatively woos his new neighbor, Karon introduces characters who are good-hearted, occasionally eccentric, and able to swap Bible quotations without sounding preachy. Gentle and funny, the novel became a grassroots success as readers gave copies to their friends.

Karon's fans have increased with each subsequent book in the series. There are Mitford-themed parties and picnics, as well as standard reading groups. The Mitford phenomenon reached its highest peak yet when the fifth book in the series, A New Song, climbed onto the bestseller lists.
