Sidney Sheldon's Complete Bookshelf

Sidney Sheldon seems to have the Midas touch. If you have ever seen the '60s TV sitcoms The Patty Duke Show or I Dream of Jeannie, then you have listened to Sheldon dialogue. The same holds true if you have ever watched Myrna Loy and Cary Grant in The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer on one of the classic movie channels. And maybe you have even read one of his books. With Zelig-like frequency, Sheldon shows up in accounts of the glory days of Tin Pan Alley, on the legendary sets of Hollywood's golden years, on the Broadway stage, and during a classic-making era in the TV industry. He grew up with his nose in a book--which, he says, "made everyone nervous." He graduated from high school in Chicago in 1935 and won a scholarship to attend Northwestern University. Unfortunately, the Great Depression was upon the country, and Sheldon had to drop out. (Later, he would fund a scholarship awarded annually to a Northwestern student.)

After working several odd jobs, Sheldon started writing songs and moved to New York City, attracted by Tin Pan Alley. But it didn't take him long to see that his music was not good enough to make his fortune, so he packed up his sheet music and moved to Hollywood, where he had some success as a screenwriter. In the '40s, Sheldon returned to New York and collaborated on several Broadway productions--as an author, not a songwriter. Later, he would win a Tony Award for writing the script for Redhead, starring Gwen Verdon. But he still kept one foot in Hollywood, writing and directing movies. During the '60s, Sheldon created Patty Duke and Jeannie for television. He wrote most of the scripts, often under a pseudonym.

Sheldon finally got around to writing novels when he was nearing 60 years old. His second book, The Other Side of Midnight, was the first of his big bestsellers and Sheldon quickly attracted a loyal readership for his glitzy, sexy, sprawling tales of love and deception among the beautiful people. He also adds elements of suspense for good measure is known for his meticulous research, as when he studied the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry for Bloodline (1978).
